24 – 30 April is the World Immunization Week 2021.
Throughout the week, BEBESEA calls for actions to ensure equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines for all, based on some key recommendations from the “Proposed Guideline to Protect Migrant Workers’ Rights during Public Health Crisis” from the report “Repression and Resilience” (December 2020). This research, conducted as part of BEBESEA initiative in East and Southeast Asia between June and November 2020, recognized some specific vulnerabilities of migrant workers, which are exacerbated during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Our findings and recommendations are convinced by the Joint Guidance Note on Equitable Access to COVID-19 Vaccines for All Migrants (March 2021) by the UN Committee on Migrant Workers (CMW), the Special Rapporteur on the human rights of migrants, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and regional human rights experts. We support their call for Equitable Vaccine for all migrants regardless of their immigration status. We also echo the experts’ argument that vaccine registration should not be used to collect information about an individual’s migration status and shared with immigration enforcement authorities.
